How did it all begin?…

My uncle’s 1972 Rover 2000TC had been succeeded and left for my cousins to play in. I am sure on visits I rarely entered the house… For over a decade I was familiar with that smell - P6 interior. I studied the attention to detail in design, such as the rear quarter light mechanism and the concealed mileage reset knob. We put a new battery on it shortly before its removal and the electrics all came to life, the first time in over a decade. I was hooked - One day I would have a Rover P6!

So what went wrong? Why do the British public express such negativity to British vehicles, especially Rovers?

You must be crazy! |

I really do not understand this country, or it seems many other people in my age group. I am passionate about Britain and especially our automotive industry. Others, it seems are not!

I have yet to own an allegro. It is on my list but the Ambassador/Princess is coming before it!

Being 26, I missed out on those dark days of the 70’s with the 3 day weeks and the ‘disastrous’ build quality, poor dealer service and quite frankly uninspiring shoddy cars. I think partly due to this ‘stereotype’ of the BL era, I had to have and try these vehicles for myself.

47 BL-Rover Group cars later and I can honestly say I have had no major issues with any of them, no more than any other manufacturer in any case.

Try as I do to establish answers to these questions, I can find none straightforward or simple.

Various books have been written discussing the many issues over the years which ultimately ended with the Phoenix Consortium’s MG Rover Group entering administration in April 2005.

Please find reviews of these books on the Books and Literature page.
